ON MIND AND BODY

I’ve always felt ambivalent about the phrase ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’ probably because I wasn’t a very sporty child. In addition, I’ve been aware of many people who live with a less than healthy body or mind because of illness or disability which isn’t in their control.  Yet over this year I’ve made an effort to get fitter, joining a couch to 5 km group with the Bassett Hounds - I still haven’t got to 5 km yet – and spending an unexpected PPI windfall on some 1 to 1 training in a gym with Libby Matthews – I recommend both very highly.  I’ve no idea if my mind is in better shape (!) but I certainly feel more resilient and that’s been helpful when my mother in law died in May and I noticed that feeling a bit stronger and a bit fitter helps me be less grumpy (this may not yet be noticeable to anyone other than myself!) so I was really interested when I looked up the source of that ‘mens sana in corpore sano’ quote to see a link with virtue.  You should pray for a healthy mind in a healthy body.  Ask for a stout heart that has no fear of death, and deems length of days the least of Nature's gifts that can endure any kind of toil, that knows neither wrath nor desire and thinks the woes and hard labours of Hercules better than the loves and banquets and downy cushions of Sardanapalus What I commend to you, you can give to yourself; For assuredly, the only road to a life of peace is virtue.  From the Roman poet, Decimus Junius Juvenal Satire X Dates around 55-130 AD/ CE In the New Testament there is a phrase often translated ‘life everlasting’ that some scholars think would be better translated ‘life abundant’ or ‘life in all its fullness’.  May the second half of 2019 help us all to lead lives of greater fullness and virtue. https://www.royalwoottonbassetthounds.co.uk

SUPPORTING THE WORK OF THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY

A group of villagers including Rosemary & Andrew Law, Annette Moore, Lesley Blackburn and Paul & Anne Granger are aiming to raise over £1,000 to support the fantastic work of the Alzheimer’s Society by taking on their Trek26Stonehenge challenge.  We will be walking 13 miles in tough terrain (i.e. scrambling up and down steep hills!) around Salisbury and Warminster on Saturday 31st August 2019.  Google Trek26Stonehenge if you want to see what it’s all about.

BROAD TOWN WI

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.  Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.  If you are interested in visiting us, please contact Kate on 01793 731536.  We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

THE GODDARD ARMS, CLYFFE PYPARD

The Goddard Arms in Clyffe Pypard has been closed for several years.  It was a very popular destination for people from Broad Town and other surrounding villages.  I know that many of us have hoped that it would re-open.  In May the current owner informed Wiltshire Council that she wished to sell the pub.  A community group now has until November to raise the funds and negotiate to buy it.  If a community group fails to buy the pub by November, then the owner can put the pub on the open market.

A group of people interested in saving the pub met in Clyffe Pypard in June.  If you would like to be involved either as an investor, a helper, a customer or if you just want to be kept informed then please contact Dianne at the Clyffe Pypard Parish Council clyffepypardpc@hotmail.com

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE

Good Energy Community Fund – volunteers needed for new Advisory Group

At the moment, applications for grants from our Community Fund are reviewed by the Parish Council.  Moving forward we would like to establish an Advisory Group made up of people in the village to review applications and then make recommendations to the Parish Council, who will remain legally responsible for the management of the fund.  Our hope in doing this is that more voices can be heard and that different types of community projects and initiatives come forward for funding.  The Advisory Group will decide how it wants to operate but it is likely that it will only need to meet twice a year.  If you would like to be part of this Group and play a key role in helping community ideas get the funding they need, then please contact the Parish Clerk (BTPCClerk@outlook.com)

Speed Indicator Device

Wiltshire Highways will soon be in the village to extend 4 of the posts on the Broad Town Road which currently have a 30 miles per hour sign on them so that they can also take the Speed Indicator Device (SID) that we are installing to remind vehicles to watch their speed.  These posts are at Broadacres, opposite the School, outside Marlborough House and at Chapel Lane. There are also two existing extended posts which can also be used for the SID – outside the Church and by the bench outside Church Farmhouse.  It is recommended that the SID is moved on a regular basis to prevent its effectiveness wearing out, so having a number of posts available to site it on will be very valuable in our efforts to reduce speeding traffic through our village.

The MyWiltshire App

The best way to report issues with fly tipping, hedge and verges, highways such as drains and pavements, potholes, litter etc., is the MyWiltshire App as this allows the exact location and photographs to be captured.  The App can be downloaded from the normal phone app stores.  More information is available at http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/mywiltshire-download.  The Parish Steward can also undertake small maintenance work in the village and he is next scheduled to be in Broad Town on July 16 and 17.  If you know of any jobs that he could do (using hand tools only) then please let the Parish Clerk know so we can brief him.

The next Parish Council meeting is 8th July at 18.30pm in the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.

COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR

This is a reminder that we have a defibrillator in the Village.  It is sited outside the Village Hall and is available for anyone to use in the unfortunate situation of someone they are with having heart failure.  It is simple to use and talks you through what you must do.  It is a requirement though, that you RING 999 FIRST to get help on the way as soon as possible.  The ambulance service will also tell you what to do and support you while you wait for the ambulance.  If you are within 200m of the Hall they will automatically tell you about the defibrillator and tell you the access code.  If you are further away but have someone who could fetch it for you quickly, you will need to ask them for the access code.
